Sports Podiatry

What is sports podiatry?

Sports podiatry involves the diagnosis and treatment of conditions and injuries relating to the foot and ankle; some lower leg injuries may also be treated by podiatrists. Podiatrists also offer practical advice on suitable footwear and exercises to condition the feet and ankles.

When is podiatry used in sport?

Podiatry can be both a preventive measure and a means of treatment. A podiatrist will treat existing injuries, as well as recommending ways to ensure the risk of injury is reduced in the future.

Conditions treated by a podiatrist

Injuries in the feet and ankles are not the only problems treated by podiatrists; many other conditions can stem from problems in the feet, ankles or lower legs. It may be beneficial to see a podiatrist if you are having pain in the upper or lower leg, back, hips and knees as well as in the ankles and the heels, forefoot or arches of the feet.

Insoles and orthotics

Podiatrists also provide a range of devices which will help to align the feet and legs properly and offer additional support during physical activity; most of these can be custom made to fit the individual.
