In Toeing

What is in toeing?

In toeing or 'pigeon toed' as it is also known describes the position of a child's foot where the feet point inwards. For many children this is a perfectly normal developmental stage, and something that they will grow out of.

Podiatry can help your child by assessing the mechanics of their leg and foot fully, in order to establish the cause of your child's in toeing, and whether or not this is within normal parameters.

Children who in toe may be more susceptible to corns or callus, due to the abnormal pressures being placed onto the foot as a result of poor biomechanics. If your child has painful corns or callus our podiatrist's can remove this pain free.

What causes in toeing?

There are three main causes for in toeing in children:

Metatarsus adductus. Metatarsus adductus is a condition whereby the foot itself curves inwards

Tibial torsion. Tibial torsion describes a twist in the leg bone (tibia). This twist is normal and rotates as the child grows.

Femoral anteversion. Femoral anteversion describes a twist in the thigh bone (femur). Again, this can be a normal developmental stage. Sometimes the thigh bone does not rotate to its correct position, which can lead to in toeing later in life.
